Square

Marktplatz

Marktplatz is the historic heart of Heidelberg’s Old Town, a square between the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Rathaus, or town hall. Cafés and colourful façades surround a space that has hosted trade and public gatherings since medieval times, making it a natural starting point for exploring the Altstadt on foot.

At the centre stands the Hercules Fountain, erected in the early 18th century after the destruction of Heidelberg during the Nine Years’ War. Nearby, the Renaissance Haus zum Ritter survived the fires of 1693 and offers a striking contrast to the buildings that rose during the city’s reconstruction. Together with the church and town hall, these landmarks make the square a compact introduction to Heidelberg’s layered history.

Come on a Wednesday or Saturday morning for the weekly market, when stalls bring fresh produce and flowers to the square. Early weekdays are quieter if you prefer to appreciate the architecture without the summer crowds. Marktplatz is easiest to reach on foot through the largely pedestrianised Old Town; around December, it also becomes one of the settings for Heidelberg’s Christmas market.
