Heidelberg Funicular

The Heidelberg Funicular, or Heidelberger Bergbahn, climbs from the Old Town to Heidelberg Castle, Molkenkur and the Königstuhl. Its first section opened in 1890, making it both a practical way up the steep hillside and a piece of the city’s transport history.

The journey has two distinct characters: modern cars run between Kornmarkt and Molkenkur, while historic wooden carriages make the upper ascent to Königstuhl. At the summit, around 568 metres above sea level, walking paths and viewpoints look out over Heidelberg, the Neckar valley and the surrounding hills.

For castle visitors, the lower funicular saves a steep walk from the Altstadt. A combined ticket is available for the lower railway and castle admission; check what it includes if you also want a guided tour of the interiors.

Start at the Kornmarkt station and allow time to change trains at Molkenkur if you’re travelling to the top. The railway can be busy in summer, so an early departure is a good idea. Autumn brings colourful woodland to the journey, though it’s worth checking the current timetable and any maintenance closures before you go.
