Hauptstraße

Hauptstraße is the pedestrian spine of Heidelberg’s Altstadt, running from Bismarckplatz through the old town toward Karlstor. Roughly 1.6 kilometres long, this lively Heidelberg shopping street mixes familiar stores with bookshops, cafés and historic inns, all within sight of the castle hill.

Much of the old town was rebuilt in the Baroque style after the destruction of the late 17th century. Heidelberg escaped widespread bombing during the Second World War, leaving many of those historic façades intact. Generations of students from Heidelberg University have helped shape the street’s sociable character, alongside the writers and visitors drawn to the city’s Romantic reputation.

Hauptstraße is a useful starting point for exploring Heidelberg on foot. Pause at the Kurpfälzisches Museum, visit the Church of the Holy Spirit on Marktplatz, or turn toward Kornmarkt for the funicular up to Heidelberg Castle. Side streets lead to smaller restaurants and glimpses of the Neckar, offering a change of pace from the main thoroughfare.

For a quieter walk, come on a weekday morning, especially outside the summer peak. Bismarckplatz is a convenient arrival point, with tram and bus connections from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof. Many shops close on Sundays, though restaurants and cafés generally remain open; check individual hours if you have a particular stop in mind.
