Outer Alster Lake — Außenalster

Hamburg’s Outer Alster Lake, or Außenalster, is a broad expanse of water framed by leafy promenades, sailing clubs and grand villas. Created when the Alster River was dammed for mills in the 13th century, the artificial lake has become one of the city’s defining public spaces, with church spires visible beyond its southern shore.

The roughly 7.4-kilometre loop around the Außenalster is a favourite route for runners and walkers, while sailboats and kayaks share the water in warmer months. The western shore offers views of Harvestehude’s stately homes; across the lake, Uhlenhorst’s streets and waterside cafés make a pleasant detour. It’s a place to see how closely Hamburg’s urban life is tied to the water, rather than simply ticking off a landmark.

Late spring and summer bring the busiest sailing season, though autumn is lovely for a quieter walk among the changing leaves. Dammtor and Hauptbahnhof stations are within walking distance of the southern end of the lake. If you plan to rent a canoe or paddleboat, arrive early on sunny weekends and check the forecast: wind can pick up quickly on the open water.
