Museum of Arts and Crafts — MK&G

The Museum of Arts and Crafts Hamburg, known as MK&G, brings art, design and everyday life together in a grand 19th-century building opposite the central station. Founded in 1877 as a collection and educational institution for artists and craftspeople, it is now one of Germany’s major museums of art and design.

Its collections span centuries and continents, from European decorative arts and Japanese ceramics to fashion, graphic design and contemporary objects. The Art Nouveau galleries are a particular draw, while the historic keyboard instruments offer a quieter detour. The pleasure is in seeing familiar things—chairs, textiles, posters and tableware—treated as evidence of how people have lived and thought.

Allow at least two to three hours, and longer if a temporary exhibition catches your eye. The museum is generally closed on Mondays; check the MK&G website for current hours and exhibition tickets before visiting. Weekday mornings are often quieter, and the location beside Hamburg Hauptbahnhof makes it easy to combine a visit with the Hamburger Kunsthalle on the other side of the station.
