Landungsbrücken is Hamburg’s most recognizable waterfront, a busy stretch of floating piers on the north bank of the Elbe. Harbor ferries and tour boats come and go beneath the green-topped towers of the historic terminal building, while cranes and shipyards across the river offer a view of a port that still works for a living.
Built in the early 20th century, the landing stages recall an era when ships connected Hamburg to destinations around the world. Today, the waterfront brings that maritime history within easy reach: the museum ship CAP SAN DIEGO is moored at nearby Überseebrücke, and the Old Elbe Tunnel, opened in 1911, leads beneath the river to Steinwerder. Walking through its tiled passage is free and offers a different perspective on the harbor.
Come on a weekday morning for a quieter walk along the piers, or take a harbor ferry for views from the water. Landungsbrücken station is served by both the S-Bahn and U-Bahn; check ticket validity before boarding a ferry. The river wind can be sharp even in mild weather, so bring a layer, and compare operators and prices before booking a harbor cruise.
