The Green Bunker on Feldstraße is one of Hamburg’s most unusual viewpoints: a vast former air-raid shelter topped with a terraced garden. A path climbs around the outside of the concrete structure, leading to views over St. Pauli, the city rooftops and, on a clear day, the Elbe.
Built during the Second World War as a flak bunker and civilian shelter, the building is a conspicuous reminder of Hamburg’s wartime history. Its recent transformation added planted terraces and a rooftop garden above the original structure, creating a public space that contrasts sharply with the bunker’s monumental concrete walls. The climb is as much a part of the experience as the panorama at the top.
The garden and mountain path are free to visit, but opening hours can change with the season, weather or events, so check ahead before making a special trip. Feldstraße station on the U3 is close by. Wear comfortable shoes for the ascent, and try a weekday morning for a quieter visit or a clear evening for softer light over the city.
