SCHIRN Kunsthalle Frankfurt

SCHIRN Kunsthalle Frankfurt is an exhibition hall devoted to modern and contemporary art, set between the Römerberg and Frankfurt Cathedral. Opened in 1986, it has no permanent collection; instead, its programme changes throughout the year, ranging from major artists’ retrospectives to thematic exhibitions that bring overlooked ideas and figures into focus.

The SCHIRN has earned a reputation for ambitious curation and shows that invite visitors to look beyond the familiar names of art history. Its modern building, with its prominent rotunda, makes a striking contrast to the reconstructed streets of Frankfurt’s old town. That setting makes a visit particularly rewarding: you can step from a contemporary exhibition straight into one of the city’s most historic neighbourhoods.

Check the current exhibition programme before visiting, as the experience depends entirely on what is showing and galleries may close between installations. Weekdays or early arrivals can be a good choice for popular shows; check the SCHIRN’s website for opening hours and ticket options. The Dom/Römer U-Bahn station is nearby, and the Römer and cathedral are both an easy walk away.
