Palmengarten

Palmengarten is Frankfurt’s botanical garden and one of the city’s most rewarding green spaces. Opened in 1871, it grew from a citizen-led effort to acquire the Duke of Nassau’s plant collection. Today, its 22-hectare grounds in the Westend bring together plants from climates around the world, just a short journey from the city centre.

A visit can take you from the historic Palm House to outdoor gardens filled with roses and seasonal flowers. The contrast between formal plantings, mature trees and glasshouse collections makes Palmengarten worth exploring even if you’re not a dedicated botanist. Concerts, exhibitions and flower shows add another dimension to the garden throughout the year.

Late spring and early summer are particularly good times to see the outdoor gardens in bloom, while autumn offers a quieter walk among changing colours. Allow at least a couple of hours and wear comfortable shoes: there is plenty of ground to cover. Check the official website before visiting for current admission prices, events and glasshouse opening times, which may differ from those of the garden.
