Square

Opernplatz

Opernplatz is a broad public square in central Frankfurt, framed by the grand façade of the Alte Oper. Its stone terraces and Lucae Fountain make it a natural place to pause between the city’s shopping streets and the Westend, whether you’re watching office workers cross the square or concertgoers gather for an evening performance.

The Alte Oper opened in 1880 and was severely damaged during the Second World War. Long known as one of Germany’s most beautiful ruins, it was restored and reopened in 1981 as a concert and events venue. The historic building gives Opernplatz much of its character, while the modern skyline beyond is a reminder of Frankfurt’s changing identity.

Visit Opernplatz in the early evening, when the light softens on the opera house and nearby café terraces begin to fill. The square connects easily to the Fressgass, a pedestrian street lined with places to eat and shop. Alte Oper U-Bahn station, served by the U6 and U7, is right by the square; check the local events calendar if you’d like to catch a concert or an outdoor festival.
