Frankfurt’s Museum Embankment, or Museumsufer, is a cultural neighbourhood along the River Main, with a particularly dense cluster of museums on the southern bank in Sachsenhausen. It is an unusually walkable stretch: grand villas and purpose-built galleries sit close to the riverside promenade, with the city’s financial district rising across the water.
The Museumsufer took shape through a major cultural investment in the 1980s, when Frankfurt expanded its museum landscape alongside its role as a financial centre. The Städel Museum is the best-known stop, with European art spanning seven centuries. Nearby institutions cover subjects from film and architecture to world cultures, giving visitors plenty of ways to build a day beyond the art galleries.
Come for a museum or two, then walk the embankment and cross the Eiserner Steg pedestrian bridge for skyline views. Many museums close on Mondays, so check individual opening times before planning a full day. Schweizer Platz U-Bahn station is within walking distance of the southern bank; for a livelier visit, the annual Museumsuferfest usually brings music, food and cultural events to the riverfront in late August.
