Set in a 19th-century villa on Frankfurt’s Museumsufer, the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection brings together works spanning some 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptian and Greek objects sit alongside medieval religious sculpture, Renaissance bronzes and intricate Baroque carvings, making this one of the city’s most rewarding museums for art lovers.
The villa was built for the industrialist Heinrich von Liebieg, and its domestic scale still shapes the experience: rooms feel intimate enough to look closely at a marble bust or a delicately carved Madonna without being overwhelmed. The museum is also known for research into polychromy, the painted surfaces that once gave many ancient sculptures a very different appearance from the white marble familiar today.
Allow around two hours for the collection, then take a break in the sculpture-dotted garden or stop at the café. The Städel Museum is a short walk along the river, making the two easy to combine. Check the Liebieghaus website for current opening hours and temporary exhibition tickets before visiting.
