German Romanticism Museum

The German Romanticism Museum in Frankfurt explores the literature, art and ideas of a movement fascinated by nature, imagination and longing. Opened in 2021 beside the Goethe House, it is the first museum devoted entirely to German Romanticism, bringing a formative chapter of European culture into the heart of the city.

Manuscripts, paintings and other objects illuminate the world of writers and artists including Novalis, E.T.A. Hoffmann and Caspar David Friedrich. The displays look beyond familiar romantic landscapes to consider the movement’s interest in dreams, philosophy and the mysterious, making the museum rewarding even for visitors who aren’t literary specialists. Its contemporary building also offers a contrast to the historic Goethe House next door.

Allow at least 90 minutes to explore, especially if you like to read exhibition texts in detail. The museum is within walking distance of central Frankfurt’s public transport connections, and a visit pairs naturally with the Goethe House. Check current opening hours, ticket arrangements and language options before you go.
