Rose Garden — Giardino delle Rose

The Giardino delle Rose, or Rose Garden, is a terraced park below Piazzale Michelangelo on Florence’s south bank. Paths wind among rose beds, olive trees and lawns, with views across the Arno to the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio. It’s a calmer place to pause than the famous viewpoint just above, though it can still get busy on sunny days.

The garden was designed by Giuseppe Poggi as part of his plans for Florence when the city was Italy’s capital in the 1860s. Today, its historic layout shares space with sculptures by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon and a small Japanese garden associated with Florence’s friendship with Kyoto. Together they give the park a character distinct from the city’s grander formal gardens.

Visit in May or early June for the best chance of seeing the roses in bloom; morning and late afternoon also bring softer light and more comfortable temperatures. Admission is free, but opening hours vary seasonally, so check before setting out. The walk up from San Niccolò is steep and some paths are uneven; alternatively, take a bus toward Piazzale Michelangelo and walk down to the garden.
