Bardini Garden

Bardini Garden, or Giardino Bardini, is a terraced hillside park in Florence’s Oltrarno, overlooking the Arno and the historic centre. Its four hectares combine formal staircases and ornamental gardens with orchards, woodland paths and quieter corners that feel a world away from the streets below.

The hillside has been cultivated since the Middle Ages and was reshaped by successive owners before the antiques dealer Stefano Bardini acquired the estate in the early 20th century. The garden’s mix of Baroque design and romantic landscaping reflects that long history. Its grand staircase is a striking centrepiece, while a separate wisteria pergola draws visitors each spring with its violet canopy.

The climb is rewarded by one of the finest views in Florence: from the upper terrace, the Duomo’s red dome and Palazzo Vecchio rise above a sweep of rooftops. Allow time to wander beyond the main viewpoints, where shaded paths and fruit trees offer a calmer alternative to the busier Boboli Garden nearby.

For the wisteria, aim for late April or early May, though flowering varies with the weather. Enter from Via de’ Bardi or Costa San Giorgio, and wear comfortable shoes for the steep paths and steps. Check opening hours before visiting, as they change seasonally, and consider pairing the garden with a longer walk through Oltrarno.
