Little Tokyo

Düsseldorf’s Little Tokyo is a compact neighbourhood centred on Immermannstraße, a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof. Japanese restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets and bookshops sit among hotels and offices, making this one of the most rewarding places in Germany to explore Japanese food and everyday culture.

The area grew alongside Düsseldorf’s postwar Japanese business community, as companies established European operations in the city and brought employees and their families with them. Today, its shops and restaurants serve both residents and visitors. Browse shelves of Japanese snacks and pantry staples, look for manga and magazines, or settle in for ramen, sushi or an izakaya meal.

Start near the main station and explore Immermannstraße and its side streets on foot. Popular restaurants can attract queues, especially at lunch and on weekends, so arrive early or check whether reservations are possible. Shop and restaurant opening hours vary, and many shops close on Sundays. If your visit coincides with Japan Day, usually held in late spring, expect large crowds at events across the city and along the Rhine.
