Königsallee — The Kö

Königsallee, known simply as the Kö, is Düsseldorf’s grand shopping boulevard and one of Germany’s most recognisable city promenades. Running through the city centre for roughly a kilometre, it is divided by a canal shaded by chestnut trees. Luxury boutiques and flagship stores give the avenue its polished reputation, but the waterside walk is just as much a part of its appeal.

The Kö took shape in the early nineteenth century, after Düsseldorf’s fortifications were dismantled and the city began to remake its centre. Over time, it became a symbol of the city’s prosperity and fashion culture. Today, the contrast between the calm canal and the busy pavements makes it an interesting place to watch Düsseldorf go about its day, whether or not you plan to shop.

Start with a stroll along the canal, then explore the boutiques and arcades or head north toward Kö-Bogen and the Hofgarten. Weekday mornings are generally quieter than Saturday afternoons, while the weeks before Christmas can be especially busy. Most shops close on Sundays, though the promenade remains pleasant for a walk. For an easy arrival, take the U-Bahn to Heinrich-Heine-Allee or Steinstraße/Königsallee, or walk over from the nearby Altstadt.
