K20, the modern art museum of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, anchors Düsseldorf’s Grabbeplatz with a sweeping façade of dark polished granite. Inside is one of Germany’s most compelling collections of twentieth-century art, with works by Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Pablo Picasso alongside other artists who transformed painting and sculpture.
The collection began with the state’s acquisition of 88 works by Klee in 1960, giving the museum a foundation in classical modernism. Its holdings trace the experiments of expressionism, abstraction and the European avant-garde, while temporary exhibitions bring fresh perspectives to the galleries. K20 rewards close looking: the appeal lies as much in the relationships between works as in the famous names on the walls.
Allow two to three hours for the museum, especially if you plan to see a special exhibition. Weekday mornings are a good bet for a quieter visit. K20 is a short walk from Heinrich-Heine-Allee station and easy to pair with Düsseldorf’s Altstadt; if you also want to visit its contemporary-focused sister venue, K21, check the current combined-ticket options.
