The Ehrenhof is a monumental cultural complex near the Rhine in Düsseldorf, where broad courtyards and symmetrical brick façades create an unexpectedly grand setting for a stroll. Designed by architect Wilhelm Kreis for the 1926 GeSoLei exhibition on health, social welfare and physical exercise, the ensemble blends classical proportions with the angular forms of its era.
Its cultural life is still going strong. The Kunstpalast brings together fine art, design and photography, while the NRW-Forum presents exhibitions exploring contemporary culture, photography and digital art. The Tonhalle concert hall, housed in a former planetarium, completes the ensemble. Even without a museum ticket, the courtyard, architectural details and nearby Rhine promenade make the Ehrenhof worth a visit.
The complex is a pleasant walk north of Düsseldorf’s Altstadt; Nordstraße U-Bahn station is also within walking distance. Come on a weekday morning for a quieter look at the courtyard, or combine a museum visit with a walk along the river. The outdoor spaces are free to explore, but museum admission and opening hours vary, so check ahead before planning an exhibition visit.
