Pile Gate is the western entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town and a memorable introduction to its fortified streets. Cross the bridge over the former moat, pass beneath the stone arches and emerge near the top of Stradun, the limestone-paved main street. Onofrio’s Fountain and the Franciscan Monastery are just inside.
The entrance is a layered piece of Dubrovnik’s defensive history: the outer Renaissance gate dates to 1537, while the inner Gothic gate is older. A wooden drawbridge once helped secure the city at night. Look for the statue of St Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint, above the outer arch.
Pile Gate is free to pass through, though access to the city walls requires a separate ticket. It can be especially busy when cruise-ship groups arrive, so try early morning or late afternoon for a quieter approach. Wear shoes with good grip: the stone surfaces can be slippery, and steps make the entrance less convenient for visitors with limited mobility.
