Dubai Mall is a vast shopping and entertainment complex in Downtown Dubai, at the foot of the Burj Khalifa. Opened in 2008, it helped establish the surrounding district as a showcase for the city’s ambitions, bringing luxury retail, family attractions and public spectacle under one roof.
Even visitors with no intention of shopping can find plenty to explore. The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo has an enormous tank visible from the mall, while an indoor ice rink adds another distinctly Dubai contrast to the desert heat. Outside, the Dubai Fountain brings crowds to the waterfront for choreographed water shows, with the Burj Khalifa rising above them.
Wear comfortable shoes: the mall is enormous, and the walk from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro station involves a long covered passage. Check attraction and fountain schedules before visiting, and book ahead for popular experiences such as the aquarium or the Burj Khalifa observation deck. Evenings are atmospheric but busy; a weekday morning offers a calmer wander.
