The Burj Al Arab is Dubai's most recognisable silhouette — a 321-metre sail-shaped tower rising from its own artificial island off Jumeirah Beach. Opened in 1999, it was purpose-built to signal that Dubai had arrived on the world stage, and for a city that tends to announce itself with volume, the Burj Al Arab still manages to feel like the loudest statement in the room. Designed by British architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins, its tensile fabric façade glows amber and gold at night, a theatrical flourish visible from much of the city's coastline.
