Kunsthofpassage

Kunsthofpassage is a network of five interconnected courtyards in Dresden’s Äußere Neustadt, linking Görlitzer Straße and Alaunstraße. Its colourful façades turn an ordinary walk through the neighbourhood into an open-air encounter with art, from animal motifs to the blue Courtyard of the Elements, where an elaborate system of funnels and downpipes carries rainwater down the wall.

Created around the turn of the millennium, the passage reflects the creative renewal of Neustadt after German reunification. Each courtyard has its own theme, and together they capture a more playful, independent side of Dresden than the baroque monuments across the Elbe.

Come for the architecture, then linger over the small shops, studios and cafés tucked into the passage. Rain adds another dimension to the Courtyard of the Elements, although the famous pipes are best appreciated as a whimsical drainage system rather than a guaranteed musical performance. The passage is also an easy starting point for exploring Neustadt’s street art and independent businesses.

The courtyards are free to explore, but individual shops and cafés keep their own hours, so visit during the day if you want to browse. Allow time to wander through all five spaces, and keep noise down: this is a place where people live and work as well as a Dresden attraction.
