Augustus Bridge

Augustus Bridge (Augustusbrücke) crosses the Elbe in central Dresden, linking the historic Altstadt with Neustadt. Its broad stone arches are part of the city’s familiar riverside silhouette, but the bridge is also a working crossing used by pedestrians, cyclists and trams.

A bridge has stood here since at least the 13th century. Augustus the Strong commissioned a major reconstruction in the 18th century, while the structure seen today largely dates from the early 20th century. Its position between the two halves of Dresden makes it a useful place to understand how the city grew around the river.

Pause along the bridge for views of the Frauenkirche dome, the Hofkirche and the Altstadt waterfront, with the Elbe stretching out on either side. Early morning and late afternoon bring particularly appealing light for photographs. The bridge is free to cross and makes a natural walking route between the old town’s museums and Neustadt’s cafés and galleries; keep an eye out for cyclists and trams as you go.
