St. Maria Himmelfahrt

Just north of Cologne Cathedral, St. Maria Himmelfahrt is a former Jesuit church with a quieter presence than its famous neighbour. Built in the 17th century, it is one of Cologne’s most important Baroque churches and a reminder of the Jesuits’ influence on religious life in the city during the Counter-Reformation.

Inside, the soaring nave leads the eye towards an elaborate high altar, where gilded details and religious imagery create a distinctly theatrical focal point. The church was badly damaged during the Second World War and later restored; its architecture and surviving furnishings offer a compelling glimpse of Cologne’s layered religious and artistic history.

St. Maria Himmelfahrt is on Marzellenstraße, a short walk from Cologne Cathedral and the central station. Check the church’s current opening and service times before visiting, and allow worshippers space if a service is in progress. Pair a stop here with a walk around the cathedral precinct for a contrast between Gothic grandeur and Baroque drama.
