Roman-Germanic Museum

The Roman-Germanic Museum (Römisch-Germanisches Museum) traces Cologne’s origins as the Roman city of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Its main building stands beside Cologne Cathedral, constructed around the Dionysus Mosaic, a richly detailed floor dating from around AD 220.

The collection brings Roman Cologne into focus through glassware, jewellery, household objects and burial monuments. Among its most striking pieces is the reconstructed Poblicius Monument, a funerary structure rising roughly 15 metres. Together, the objects reveal both the sophistication of Roman craftsmanship and the texture of everyday life on the Rhine.

The main museum has been undergoing renovation, with parts of the collection displayed at temporary venues, so check the official website for current locations, opening hours and access to specific highlights before visiting. If the cathedral-side building is open, it’s a short walk from Cologne Hauptbahnhof; allow time for a stroll through the surrounding Altstadt, too.
