Rheinpark

Rheinpark is a broad sweep of lawns, gardens and riverside paths on the eastern bank of the Rhine in Cologne. Its setting in Deutz gives it some of the city’s best views across the water: Cologne Cathedral rises above the opposite bank, while barges and boats move steadily along the river.

The park was shaped by the Federal Garden Shows of 1957 and 1971, and its landscaped grounds remain an appealing piece of Cologne’s postwar garden history. Today, locals come to picnic, cycle and stroll beneath mature trees. The nearby Tanzbrunnen open-air venue adds a cultural dimension, while the Kölner Seilbahn cable car offers a seasonal ride across the Rhine towards the zoo.

Visit on a weekday morning for a quieter walk, or come on a warm evening when the skyline catches the light. The park is within walking distance of Köln Messe/Deutz station; follow the river north from the station area. Cable car hours vary by season, so check ahead if you want to ride, and use public transport when events at Tanzbrunnen are likely to draw crowds.
