Rheinauhafen is a former industrial harbour on the west bank of the Rhine, just south of Cologne’s old town. Redeveloped in the early 2000s, it pairs restored port buildings with contemporary offices and apartments. Its best-known landmarks are the three Kranhäuser, crane-shaped towers whose silhouettes recall the harbour’s working past.
The neighbourhood rewards a slow walk along the waterfront, where old warehouses and harbour structures sit beside striking modern architecture. Restaurants, cafés and galleries give the district life beyond its skyline, while the riverside promenade offers views across the Rhine. At the northern end, the Schokoladenmuseum makes an easy addition to a visit.
Come in the late afternoon for softer light on the Kranhäuser and time for a drink or meal by the water. Rheinauhafen is easily reached on foot from the old town, or by public transport via stops such as Severinstraße. The waterfront is pleasant year-round, though it can be exposed to wind in colder weather.
