Cologne’s Flora & Botanical Garden is a green retreat in Riehl, just north of the city centre. Its formal flower beds, mature trees and botanical collections make it a rewarding place for a slow walk, whether you’re interested in plants or simply need a break from the city.
The landscaped Flora opened in 1864 as a pleasure garden, while the neighbouring botanical garden was established in the early 20th century. Together, they combine ornamental garden design with plant collections from around the world. The elegant Flora building, originally conceived as a glass palace and now used for events, remains the park’s architectural centrepiece.
There’s plenty of variety within the grounds, from formal displays and rhododendron plantings to quieter paths among trees and shrubs. Spring and early summer are particularly colourful, though the changing seasonal displays give the garden appeal throughout the year.
Entry to the outdoor garden is free. Check the official website for current opening times and greenhouse access before visiting, as facilities and exhibitions can change. Take tram line 18 to Zoo/Flora and combine your visit with nearby Cologne Zoo; a weekday morning is a good choice for a quieter wander.
