Ehrenfeld

Ehrenfeld is a neighbourhood just west of central Cologne where former factories and brick workshops share the streets with murals, cafés and independent shops. Once an industrial working-class district, it has become one of the city’s most distinctive creative quarters without entirely losing its rough-edged character.

Venloer Straße is the best place to get a feel for Ehrenfeld: Turkish bakeries, casual restaurants, vintage shops and bars line this busy main street. Turn onto smaller streets such as Körnerstraße to find quieter cafés and local shops, or explore the area’s street art on foot. At night, concert venues and clubs draw crowds from across Cologne. The neighbourhood also has an important place in the city’s history: memorials recall the Ehrenfeld Group, whose members resisted Nazi rule and were executed in 1944.

Take U-Bahn line 3 or 4 to Venloer Straße/Gürtel and explore from there; many of the neighbourhood’s attractions are within walking distance. Check venue schedules in advance if you’re planning a night out, as opening times and events vary. Most shops close on Sundays, though cafés and restaurants may still be open.
