Cologne Zoo

Cologne Zoo, or Kölner Zoo, is one of Germany’s oldest zoological gardens, set in a leafy part of the city near the Rhine. Founded in 1860, it makes a rewarding half-day trip beyond Cologne Cathedral, with thousands of animals and enough variety to interest adults as well as children.

The zoo’s long history is visible in its architecture: several historic buildings remain alongside more modern habitats. Its work in conservation and breeding programmes also gives visitors a chance to learn about threatened species and the challenges they face.

Highlights include the Hippodom, where hippos can be seen above and below the water, the spacious Elephant Park and the primate habitats. The aquarium adds an indoor dimension, with fish, reptiles and other smaller creatures worth taking time to see.

Wear comfortable shoes and allow at least half a day to explore. Arrive early on weekends and during school holidays for a quieter start, and check ticket options online before visiting. The Zoo/Flora tram stop makes the zoo easy to reach from central Cologne; the neighbouring Flora botanical garden is a natural addition to the outing.
