The Grand Egyptian Museum is one of the most ambitious cultural projects of the 21st century — a colossal institution built at the edge of the Giza plateau, close enough to the pyramids that you can see them from the atrium. Opened in phases from 2023, GEM was designed to finally give Egypt's extraordinary collection of antiquities the space and context it deserves, after decades of overcrowding at the old Cairo Museum in Tahrir Square. The building itself is an architectural statement: a vast translucent stone facade that filters desert light across galleries holding more than 100,000 artifacts, the largest collection of ancient Egyptian heritage ever assembled under one roof.
