Coptic Cairo is a historic enclave in Old Cairo, built around the remains of the Roman fortress of Babylon. Its churches and narrow lanes preserve layers of the city’s Christian history, much of which predates the founding of Islamic Cairo in the 10th century.
The Hanging Church, raised above a Roman gatehouse, is known for its wooden ceiling and collection of icons. Nearby, the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus is traditionally associated with the Holy Family’s journey through Egypt. The Coptic Museum adds context with textiles, manuscripts and carved stonework spanning centuries of Egyptian Christian art.
Coptic Cairo is easy to reach via Mar Girgis metro station. Dress modestly when visiting churches, wear comfortable shoes for the uneven paths, and check opening hours in advance, especially for the museum and individual churches.
