Cairo Tower rises 187 metres above Gezira Island, its lotus-inspired concrete lattice making it one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Designed by Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib and completed in 1961, the modernist tower became a symbol of national pride in the years following the 1952 revolution.
The observation deck offers a sweeping view of Cairo: the Nile curls around Gezira, the dense city stretches towards the horizon, and on clear days the Pyramids of Giza appear in the distance. Sunset brings softer light and a particularly atmospheric view, though haze can obscure the landmarks beyond the city.
Visit on a weekday morning for a quieter experience and a better chance of clear views. Buy tickets at the base and take the lift to the top; the open-air deck can be breezy, so bring a light layer in cooler months. Afterwards, explore nearby Zamalek, where tree-lined streets and cafés make a pleasant contrast to Cairo’s busier roads.
