The Romanian Athenaeum is Bucharest's most beloved landmark and one of the finest concert halls in Europe — a neoclassical rotunda crowned with a pale green dome that rises improbably elegant above the chestnut-lined boulevard of Calea Victoriei. Built between 1886 and 1888 through a remarkable public fundraising campaign whose slogan 'Give a penny for the Athenaeum' is still remembered by Romanians today, it stands as proof that culture here wasn't handed down from above but fought for collectively. The circular great hall inside is breathtaking: a 41-metre-high dome painted with a 70-metre panoramic fresco depicting scenes from Romanian history, gilded balconies, crimson velvet, and acoustics that have made it the permanent home of the George Enescu Philharmonic since 1914.
