Cișmigiu Gardens is Bucharest's oldest and most beloved public park, a 17-hectare green lung sitting at the heart of the city just minutes from the hustle of Calea Victoriei. Laid out in the 1840s under the supervision of German landscape architect Wilhelm Friedrich Meyer, the gardens were built on the site of a former Ottoman fountain district — 'cișmea' meaning fountain in Turkish — and the memory of that layered history still feels somehow present in the old plane trees and winding paths that refuse to follow a straight line.
