Cișmigiu Gardens is Bucharest’s oldest public garden, a leafy retreat in the city centre a short walk from Calea Victoriei. Winding paths, mature trees and a lake give the park a quieter, more intimate character than the broad boulevards around it.
Created in the mid-19th century under landscape architect Wilhelm Friedrich Meyer, the gardens grew from a former marshy area into a fashionable place for Bucharest residents to stroll. The name recalls a nearby public fountain: cișmea is a Romanian word derived from the Turkish word for fountain.
Come for a walk around the lake, the shaded benches and the Rotunda of Writers, a collection of busts honouring Romanian literary figures. Entry is free, and mornings are a good time to visit for a quieter wander. Rowboat rentals on the lake are seasonal, so check availability if getting on the water is a priority.
