Cărturești Carusel is a bookshop in Bucharest’s Old Town, on lively Lipscani Street. Its white atrium, curved balconies and spiral staircases make it one of the city’s most photographed interiors, but it’s also a place to browse books, music, stationery and gifts across several floors.
The building once belonged to the Chrissoveloni banking family and later became a department store during the Communist era. After years of neglect and a careful restoration, it reopened as Cărturești Carusel in 2015. Its layered history and contemporary design make it a compelling stop amid the Old Town’s historic streets.
Come on a weekday morning for a quieter look around, and allow time to browse beyond the photogenic ground floor. The selection includes English-language titles, though availability varies; there’s also a bistro on the top floor for a break.
