Cărturești Carusel

Cărturești Carusel is one of the most visually arresting bookshops in the world, occupying a meticulously restored 19th-century building in the heart of Bucharest's old town. Originally constructed in 1860 as a bank and later used by the Communist regime as a luxury goods store for the party elite, the building sat neglected for years before the Cărturești chain transformed it into a six-floor cathedral of books in 2015. The result is a soaring white atrium laced with wrought-iron balconies, thousands of titles climbing the walls, and a top-floor café that feels more like a reading room in a grand European library than anything you'd associate with modern retail.
