Minnewater, often called the Lake of Love, is a long stretch of water at the southern edge of Bruges’ historic centre. Willows, swans and stone bridges give it a romantic reputation, but the surrounding park is just as appealing for a quiet walk away from the busier market squares.
The lake was once part of Bruges’ working waterways, serving as a harbour and helping regulate water flowing into the city’s canals. The medieval Powder Tower and nearby sluices hint at this practical past, when the water was infrastructure rather than simply a scenic backdrop.
Cross the bridge for a view along the lake, then wander through Minnewaterpark towards the nearby Beguinage. Come early in the morning for a quieter visit, especially in summer. The park is free to explore and is a short walk from Bruges railway station, making it an easy first or last stop in the city.
