Bremen’s Übersee-Museum, or Overseas Museum, brings natural history, world cultures and global trade together in an ambitious collection directly opposite the Hauptbahnhof. Founded in 1896, it reflects the city’s long history as a port and trading centre, offering a window into the connections that shaped Bremen and the wider world.
The museum’s immersive displays take visitors across Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas, combining cultural objects with reconstructed environments and exhibits on the natural world. It is also a place to consider the complex origins of ethnographic collections assembled during the colonial era. Temporary exhibitions add contemporary perspectives on subjects such as ecology and globalisation.
Allow two to three hours to explore, especially if you want time for the larger reconstructed settings. A weekday morning is a good choice for a quieter visit. The museum is easy to reach by train or tram, but check current opening times and exhibition details before setting out; it is generally closed on Mondays.
