Bremen’s Stadtwald is a leafy urban forest just north of the Bürgerpark, offering a quieter, less formal counterpart to its landscaped neighbour. Paths wind beneath mature trees and past open clearings, making it an easy place to trade the city centre for birdsong and a longer walk.
The Stadtwald was laid out in the early 20th century as an extension of Bremen’s green spaces. Together with the Bürgerpark, which was created through civic initiative in the 19th century, it reflects the city’s longstanding investment in public recreation. Its woodland atmosphere feels distinct from the Bürgerpark’s ornamental lawns and waterways.
Come for a gentle cycle, a run or an unhurried wander, particularly in autumn when the foliage brings colour to the trails. The Stadtwaldsee, also known as the Uni-See, is nearby if you want to extend your outing. Paths can be muddy after rain, so wear suitable shoes; tram line 6 towards the university provides a useful public transport connection to the area.
