Osterdeich

Osterdeich is a long, grassy embankment beside the Weser River in Bremen, with paths, mature trees and room to sit above the water. Stretching east from the city centre toward the Weserstadion, it is part flood defence, part promenade and one of the city’s favourite places to spend an unhurried afternoon.

Built to help protect Bremen from flooding, the dyke remains a working part of the city’s river landscape. It is also woven into local life: walkers, cyclists, students and families come here for daily exercise, picnics and summer evenings overlooking the Weser. Its easygoing atmosphere offers a glimpse of Bremen beyond the old town’s more formal sights.

The appeal is simple: find a spot on the grassy slope and watch boats pass, or follow the river toward the stadium and the neighbourhoods beyond. On warm days, the embankment fills with people, while the raised paths offer open views across the water even when you’re just passing through.

Visit in the late afternoon or early evening for softer light and a lively riverside scene. The stretch near Sielwall is convenient for combining a walk with a visit to Bremen’s Viertel neighbourhood. If you’re cycling, keep an eye out for pedestrians and follow the marked routes; the paths can be busy on sunny weekends.
