Kunsthalle Bremen is a landmark art museum on the edge of the Wallanlagen park, a short walk from Bremen’s old town. Opened in 1849, it was founded by the Kunstverein in Bremen, a civic art association that continues to support the museum. Its collection traces European art from the Middle Ages to the present, bringing centuries of painting, sculpture and works on paper into conversation.
The collection ranges from Dutch Old Masters to French Impressionism and early modern art, with works by artists including Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh. Look out, too, for Paula Modersohn-Becker, whose expressive paintings are closely tied to the artistic life of the Bremen region. The Kunsthalle’s extensive prints and drawings collection is another strength, although individual works on paper are not always on display.
Allow a couple of hours for the collection and longer if a temporary exhibition catches your eye. Check the Kunsthalle Bremen website before visiting for current exhibitions and opening times; the museum is generally closed on Mondays. The nearby Wallanlagen make a pleasant route to or from the old town, while tram stops around Domsheide are convenient for public transport.
