The Bremen Town Musicians Statue is a bronze sculpture beside the western wall of Bremen Town Hall, just off the Marktplatz. Created by Gerhard Marcks and unveiled in 1953, it depicts the donkey, dog, cat and rooster from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, balanced one above the other. The compact monument has become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
In the story, four aging animals leave their owners and set out for Bremen to become musicians, though they never actually reach the city. Their unlikely alliance has made the tale an enduring symbol of solidarity and resilience, and the statue a source of local pride.
Look for the donkey’s front legs, polished bright by generations of visitors: tradition says that holding both at once brings good luck or grants a wish. The statue is free to visit and accessible at any time. Come early in the morning for a quieter view and easier photos, then explore the nearby Marktplatz, Bremen Town Hall and Roland statue on foot.
