Via Pescherie Vecchie

Via Pescherie Vecchie is a narrow food-filled street in Bologna’s Quadrilatero, the historic market district just off Piazza Maggiore. Shopfronts display hanging prosciutto, wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano and fresh pasta, while produce stalls and tightly packed tables give the lane its lively, unmistakably Bolognese character.

The street’s name means “old fishmongers’ street”, a reminder of the trades that once clustered in the Quadrilatero. The area has been a commercial centre since the Middle Ages, and food remains at the heart of its identity. Delicatessens, bakeries, wine bars and market vendors now share the surrounding lanes, making this one of the most rewarding places to explore Bologna’s culinary culture on foot.

Come hungry and graze on mortadella, fresh pasta or pizza al taglio, then linger over a glass of Pignoletto or a spritz. Morning is a good time to see the stalls well stocked; late afternoon and early evening suit an aperitivo. Opening hours vary, especially on Sundays, so check ahead if you have a particular shop in mind. The street is pedestrian-friendly and only a short walk from Piazza Maggiore, making it easy to include in a tour of the historic centre.
