Via Drapperie

Via Drapperie is a narrow historic street in Bologna’s Quadrilatero, the old market district just east of Piazza Maggiore. Food shops and stalls fill the lane with the sights and smells of aged Parmigiano, mortadella, fresh pasta and seasonal produce. It is one of the most rewarding places to explore Bologna’s food culture on foot.

The street takes its name from the drapers and cloth merchants who traded here in the Middle Ages. The surrounding lanes were historically associated with different trades, and names such as Via Pescherie Vecchie recall the district’s long connection with fishmongers and market life.

Today, Via Drapperie remains a place to shop as well as sightsee. Browse delicatessens for regional cheeses and cured meats, pick up ingredients for a picnic, or stop at a nearby osteria for a plate of tagliatelle al ragù. The compact streets are busiest around mealtimes, when shoppers mingle with visitors at shop counters and outdoor tables.

Visit in the morning for the fullest choice at food shops and stalls, and check individual opening hours if you are coming on a Sunday or over lunch. Ask for prices before ordering cheese or sliced meat by weight. Via Drapperie is a short walk from Piazza Maggiore; the lanes are narrow, so exploring on foot is the easiest option.
