Via dell’Indipendenza

Via dell’Indipendenza is central Bologna’s grand north–south avenue, linking the area around Piazza Maggiore with the railway station. It is more a street than a neighbourhood, but its long porticoes give it a distinct rhythm: shoppers, commuters and visitors move beneath the arches, sheltered from summer sun and winter rain.

Created in the late 19th century to connect the historic centre with Bologna’s expanding railway network, the avenue is straighter and more orderly than the medieval lanes on either side. Its landmarks include Bologna Cathedral, San Pietro, and the Teatro Arena del Sole; near the northern end, the gardens of the Montagnola offer a leafy detour.

Visit for a walk that mixes architecture with everyday city life. Browse the shops, pause for an espresso at a bar counter, then explore the side streets for traditional dishes such as tortellini in brodo. Late afternoon is good for people-watching, especially during the evening passeggiata. Bologna Centrale is a short walk from the northern end, and the porticoes make the route comfortable in most weather. Parts of the centre have weekend traffic restrictions, but watch for buses and cyclists where the avenue is open to traffic.
