Strada Maggiore

Strada Maggiore is one of Bologna’s great historic streets, running from the Two Towers towards Porta Maggiore along the route of the ancient Roman Via Emilia. Part neighbourhood, part thoroughfare, it is a good place to see the city beyond its busiest piazzas, with residents, students and visitors sharing its long covered pavements.

The street’s porticoes range from grand masonry arcades to the rare medieval timber structure at Casa Isolani. Bologna’s porticoes are a defining feature of the city, with a selection recognised by UNESCO. Farther along, the Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi is framed by an elegant arcade, while noble palazzi recall the street’s importance to generations of wealthy Bolognese families.

Take time to visit Palazzo Sanguinetti, home to the Museo internazionale e biblioteca della musica, or the Museo Davia Bargellini, where paintings and decorative arts fill a former aristocratic palace. Between stops, browse the small shops and side streets, or settle into an osteria for tagliatelle or a mortadella sandwich.

Start on foot at Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, beside the Two Towers, and allow time to wander under the porticoes. Morning is a good choice for quieter arcades, while late afternoon brings warm light to the terracotta facades. Check church and museum hours before visiting, especially around lunchtime and on Mondays, and take care on uneven paving and when crossing the busy road.
