Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is a Baroque basilica on Colle della Guardia, overlooking Bologna from the southwest. Its terracotta-red dome is a familiar sight across the city, while inside, the church holds a revered image of the Virgin and Child that has drawn pilgrims for centuries.

According to tradition, the icon arrived from Constantinople in the twelfth century. Its annual procession into Bologna is a cherished local ritual: the image is carried down to the Cathedral of San Pietro before returning to the sanctuary. The church is also closely linked to the Portico di San Luca, a covered arcade of almost four kilometres that connects the hill to Porta Saragozza. Built from the seventeenth century onwards with support from local residents, it remains an expression of the city's devotion.

Walking the portico is one of Bologna's most memorable experiences, with a gentle start giving way to a steeper climb near the top. Allow roughly an hour from Porta Saragozza, wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable in summer; the San Luca Express tourist road train is an alternative to walking. The sanctuary is an active place of worship, so dress modestly, keep quiet inside and check opening hours before visiting.
