San Luca Portico

The San Luca Portico is Bologna’s most extraordinary covered walkway, stretching nearly four kilometres from Porta Saragozza to the hilltop Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. Its 666 arches pass through residential streets before climbing the wooded Colle della Guardia, making it both a monumental work of architecture and a route still woven into local life.

Built over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries with support from citizens, guilds and noble families, the portico shelters the traditional procession of the Madonna di San Luca icon between the sanctuary and the city. The dramatic Arco del Meloncello marks the crossing over Via Saragozza and the beginning of the steeper ascent. The portico is also part of Bologna’s UNESCO-listed network of historic arcades.

Walking to San Luca is as much about the journey as the destination. Pilgrims, runners and families share the route, passing devotional chapels and plaques beneath the changing rhythm of the arches. At the top, the sanctuary’s distinctive dome and hillside setting reward the climb.

Start early or in the late afternoon, especially in summer, and bring water and comfortable shoes: the final section is steep despite the shade. Allow around an hour for the uphill walk at a relaxed pace, or take a bus towards Meloncello to shorten it. The San Luca Express tourist train offers an alternative way up from the city centre.
