Salaborsa Library

Biblioteca Salaborsa is Bologna’s central public library and one of its most distinctive civic spaces. Enter from Piazza del Nettuno, beside Piazza Maggiore, to find a glass-roofed hall lined with galleries, where students, families and locals read, work and meet. It feels as much like a covered piazza as a library.

Part of Palazzo d’Accursio, the historic seat of Bologna’s government, the building takes its name from its former use as a stock exchange. It reopened as a library in 2001 after a restoration that uncovered layers of the city’s past. Glass panels in the main hall reveal archaeological remains below, including traces of Roman Bononia and the medieval city.

Salaborsa is worth a visit even if you don’t plan to borrow a book: the architecture and excavations offer a glimpse of Bologna’s history alongside its everyday life. Entry is free, and it’s an easy stop between the Neptune Fountain and the Basilica of San Petronio. Check current opening hours before visiting, as they vary by day, and confirm access times for the lower archaeological area. Keep voices low in the reading rooms; weekday mornings are generally quieter than late afternoons.
